AP BIOLOGY (450)
Grade: 11, 12 Year Credits: 6
Prerequisite: A grade of 85 or higher in Biology J and Chemistry J would indicate a high probability of success. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
AP Biology examines, in depth, cell physiology, genetics, evolution, energy, organismal biology, and other topics. Much independent work is required. Laboratory work in cell energy, bacteriology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, and cat anatomy are emphasized.
AP CHEMISTRY (460)
Grade: 11, 12 Year Credits: 6
Prerequisite: A grade of 85 or higher in Chemistry J or H and a fourth year of math taken concurrently would indicate a high probability of success. Exceptions will be made on a case- by case basis.
AP Chemistry stresses theoretical aspects of chemistry, such as structure of matter, kinetic theory of matter, chemical equilibria, chemical kinetics, and basic concepts of thermodynamics. Proper record keeping of quantitative and qualitative laboratory work is emphasized. Students must be recommended by their first-year chemistry teacher and must be able to integrate math applications with chemistry theory.
AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (465)
Grade: 11, 12 Year Credits: 6
Prerequisite: A grade of 85 or higher in Biology J, Chemistry J, and two years of social studies at J or higher level would indicate a high probability of success. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
AP Environmental Science provides students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternate solutions for resolving or preventing them. The course focuses on the real science behind environmental problems and issues. A lab experience and field trips are included in this course.
AP PHYSICS C (467)
Grades: 11, 12 Year Credits: 6
Prerequisite: A grade of 85 or higher in Pre-calculus and Trigonometry, Physics H or J while taking Calculus concurrently would indicate a high probability of success. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
AP Physics C concentrates on the development of the concepts of mechanics, electromagnetism and problem-solving skills, both theoretical and experimental. Calculus skills are developed through the use of computer-based experiments and software and an appropriate review of mechanics. At least one-quarter of the course time is devoted to the development of research skills in the context of topics in modern physics – topics as diverse as the Chaos Theory and plasma physics. Students choose the direction of their research following their personal interests. This course prepares students for the AP Physics C exam.
