H.S. Football: Watchung Hills capitalizes on mistakes
By TODD COHEN

Watchung Hills found out Friday night that it's definitely not over until it's over.
Trailing by two touchdowns and hampered by an offense that couldn't finish any of its first seven drives and served up three turnovers, the Warriors found new life on its opposition's own sloppy play.
The Warriors rallied for three scores off of three turnovers in the final 12:48 to shock Montgomery 23-16. Watchung Hills, which was ranked 8th in North 2, Group IV, kept its postseason hopes alive with the victory.
Everything appeared to be going Montgomery's way in the first three quarters. The Cougars were finishing drives, connecting on their occasional pass attempts, and taking advantage of Watchung Hills' miscues.
The story was the exact opposite for the rest of the game.
Watchung Hills had the ball three times with an average field position of the Montgomery 15 yard line. With the short field, the Warriors were almost handed opportunities to crawl back into the game.
"We weren't focused at all in the first half," said Warriors quarterback Will Hering, who had two interceptions in a dismal first half. "We didn't have great ball security, and at halftime, we realized playoffs were on the line and we needed to step it up."
Montgomery muffed the first of two punts with 3:06 left in the third quarter, giving the ball to Watchung Hills (5-3) at the 12-yard line. Hering found Kevin Scholato for a touchdown and then a two-point conversion with 48 seconds left in the quarter.
With a few seconds left in the third quarter, Montgomery's Connor Chick was intercepted by David Stone, who brought the ball up to the Cougars 17 yard line. Hering found Scholato wide open in the flat for a 17-yard strike off play action to tie the game.
On its first play of the next time, Montgomery lost the ball for the third time at its own 26. Six plays later, Matt Netta pounded through for the game-winning 1-yard score with 8:09 left.
"We've had some success with play action in the past," Watchung Hills coach Jim Benedict said. "Our quarterback was poised even with the way things went in the first half."
Montgomery had one final chance to tie the game. Quarterback Connor Chick completed three straight passes to get the ball to the Warriors' 37-yard line. But linebacker Adam Laird and lineman Mark Wroblewski came up with two huge sacks to thwart the Cougars chances.
The loss eliminated Montgomery's hopes of making the playoffs in Central Jersey IV. The Cougars (3-5) dropped below the required .500 mark.
"This one is tough," Montgomery coach Zoran Milich said. "It's a bitter pill to swallow. We didn't play clean football for 48 minutes."
Ronnie Rowe caught two touchdown passes and Sam Morrison also scored twice to power Watchung Hills to a 34-0 victory over Franklin last night in Warren Twp.
Watchung Hills (3-2) began its scoring with a 52-yard touchdown run by Chris Giraldo in the first quarter. Will Herring, who completed eight of 10 passes for 83 yards and three touchdowns, then hooked up with Rowe on a 15-yard score. He also connected for scores with Rowe on a 9-yard touchdown and Morrison from 10 yards out.
Morrison also scored on a 19-yard run.
Franklin, which was playing the first of four straight road games, fell to 2-3.
