The Media Center subscribes to 19 research databases and owns more than 400 Gale Virtual Reference Library eBooks and 501 ABC-CLIO eBooks. They are available 24/7, both in school and at home.

To access the WHRHS research databases, go to nfuse.whrhs.org, or select the Technology link at the top of the WHRHS home page. Log in with your username and password, open the Media Center folder and click on the appropriate database icon.

Research Databases

ABC-CLIO Social Studies Databases comprises eight databases:
     American Government

Each database provides a wide array of resources including 15,000 primary and secondary sources, biographies, maps, flags, photographs, audio and video clips, government and court documents, cultural documents, and speeches and narratives

Biography Resource Center contains biographies on more than 340,000 people throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas. Biographical information comes from over 135 Gale Group sources, as well as full-text articles from periodicals and web links.

CountryWatch includes up-to-date information on each of the recognized countries of the world. CountryReviews includes demographic, political, economic, business, cultural and environmental information. CountryWire provides daily news coverage for every country and a significant news archive. Additional features include CountryWatch Data, the CountryWatch Map Gallery, the Image Gallery, the Global Guide, the weekly Political Intelligence Briefing, and the associated Intelligence Wire.

CQ Researcher provides single-themed reports and analyses of political and social issues, with regular reports on topics in health, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the U.S. economy. Each 12,000 word report can be read in its entirety or by section, which includes a background and chronology; an assessment of the current situation; tables and maps; pro/con statements from representatives of opposing positions; and bibliographies of key sources.

JSTOR includes archives of over 1,100 leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs and other materials useful for academic work. The entire archive is full-text searchable, offers search term highlighting, includes high-quality images, and is interlinked by millions of citations and references.

Lands and Peoples contains 460 full-text articles that describe the land, people, economy, history, and government of countries, states, and provinces. It features 600 biographies, 500 tables and fact boxes,1,200 maps and flags,1,100 photographs and illustrations, 3,000 article-to-article links, and 7,000 web links. Users can search the Global News Desk, with a weekly news feature and links to the previous week's stories; the, Electronic Atlas, with more than 1,000 maps; Focus: North America, with articles on the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, and their regions, states, and provinces; Culture Cross, with comparisons of the land, people, economy, history, or facts and figures of any two continents, countries, or states/provinces; L & P Almanac, with facts and figures, flags, charts, and tables; Passport to Fun, with educational games that explore countries, cultures, and current events; and Mexico Articles in Spanish, with Spanish-language versions of all articles on Mexico and the Mexican states.

NoveList is a readers' advisory with over 150,000 fiction titles for all age groups. Users can search by title, author, or subject of the book. There are 4,000 custom created articles and lists organized by genres, themes, and awards. Book Discussion Guides, Author Biographies, Author Read-alikes, Recommended Reads, and Book Talks are provided for children and adults.

NoveList Plus contains 50,000 readable nonfiction titles.


Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center contains more than 8,700 pro and con viewpoint articles and 4,700 topic overviews on current social issues. It also includes 4,700 topic overviews, 375 primary documents, 775 court- case overviews, 300 biographies of social activists and reformers, 5,600 statistical tables and charts, 1,300 images, and 2,300 web links.

Oxford English Dictionary Online provides access to the 20-volume Second Edition Oxford English Dictionary, three Additions Series volumes, and more than 1,800 new and revised words each quarter. It traces the evolution of 600,000+ words across the English-speaking world as well as 2.5 million quotations. It also offers etymological analysis, listings of variant spellings, and shows pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers contains scanned images of individual articles and full pages of The New York Times, as well as photgraphs, graphics, advertisements, editorials, and special sections. Coverage extends from the first issue on September 18, 1851 to December 31, 2005. Articles from 2006 to the present may be found in eLibrary Curriculum Edition.

Science Resource Center contains articles from 150 full-text science magazines and 30 reference titles in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, math, environmental science, life science, medicine, space science, computer science, technology, history of science, science and society, science as inquiry, and science-related biographies. Also featured are more than 8,000 multimedia records, including pictures, illustrations, audio clips and video clips, and links to 500 authoritative Web sites.

Student Resource Center contains more than eight million full-text articles from 1,000 periodicals and newspapers. It features primary documents, creative works, and multimedia content, including podcasts, video and audio clips. flags, maps and seals, and photographs. A Toolbox assists students in selecting research topics, creating outlines, organizing information, writing papers, and citing sources.

Times Digital Archive, 1785-1985 contains facsimile images of every page as published in The Times (London) from 1785-1985. It covers all major international political, legal, business, and social news ranging from the French Revolution to the Falkland War, as well as feature articles, advertisements, editorials, commentaries, and a picture gallery.

WebFeet features thousands of preselected, annotated, and cataloged Web sites reviewed by librarians, subject experts, educators, and editors. Sites are added on a bimonthly basis and coverr a broad range of areas, from curriculum-based research (such as American history or science experiments) to specific interests (such as lesson plans or grant proposal writing and ecotourism).
